The Jesse Unruh Building Renovation project will completely renovate and modernize the existing building for continued use as a State-owned office building for the California State Treasurer’s Office.
After continuously serving the State of California for over 90 years, the structure originally known as State Office Building No. 1 is in need of updating. The Jesse Unruh Building Renovation project will revitalize and rehabilitate the National Register-listed historic building and its site for the continued use as the California State Treasurer’s office. The project will also restore the circular fountain within the traffic circle to its historic appearance and make it operational once again.
The building’s exterior will be cleaned, and cladding materials repaired; historic windows will be rehabilitated, and inefficient aluminum windows will be replaced. At the interior, the project will rehabilitate historic areas and preserve character-defining features while integrating progressive workplace environments into spaces that were significantly modified over the last century. The project will provide a contemporary workplace within a historic setting and a healthy environment that promotes modern work practices and collaboration opportunities.
To get the building ready for the next 100 years, the renovation will modernize all building systems, improve the structural seismic performance, incorporate a new fire sprinkler system and alarm, upgrade building security, enhance universal accessibility and add new amenities. The project will also meet or exceed the State’s targeted sustainability goals of Zero Net Energy and LEED Silver Certification, as well as carbon neutral goals for operating without reliance on fossil fuels. As a project historic property, all work will comply with the Secretary of Interior's Standards.
